DFT – Pressure Regulating Unit

On Oil Rigs Air is commonly used for the conveyance of drilling waste via blowers into skips, vacuum boxes but increasingly into ISO tank containers designed and certified DNV 2.7.1 EN12079 for Offshore
use, ISO tank containers that can be operated whilst standing in the vertical plane.

Pressurized service air can be obtained from the Rig itself or more commonly from one or more Air Compressors.

The Air compressors use Rig air to start up. The Compressors are stacked to minimise deck space and are secured with iso container twist-locks. There are also heavy angle sections welded at each corner
of the lower Compressor to secure them in place.

Service air is piped to a 2” Distribution Manifold from where air is supplied to the Cuttings Blowers and via the PRU to the DIM (DFT Installation Module) located at the foot of each of the DFT containers.

Description

From the Air Distribution Manifold, one (1) 2” hose is run to the PRU from where it branches into two (2) 2” hoses run to DIM (DF Installation Module) or as the case may be to an Air Header. The DIM as well as Air Headers will have 2” ‘T’s with union fittings to connect to air hoses. The PRU regulates the pressure for Top air and Line (Convey) air. DN 50 (2”) ‘snap lock’ connectors are fitted to facilitate quick connect options on the Air Distribution Manifold, the PRU and the Top Branch Air Inlet Manifold & Conveying Air Branch Air Inlet Manifold as illustrated below.

Multi-functional Air regulating unit specified

The PRU regulates the required pressure for each of the four functions,

  • Conveyance of material from the Dual Fuse Tank (DFT) containers

  • Tank (Top) Air (application of air in void space between from dished head and cargo in tank)
  • Control Air (to operate air actuated valves)
  • Pulse Air-Air Sweeps (Air that is pulsated with timing set by the Pulse Air panel before being injected via five nozzles incorporated into the bottom Conical section of the DFT container)
  • The PRU regulates the air supply that is used to discharge the DFT containers into another batch of DFT containers located on the PSV. Fitted to the PRU are (2) two pressure relief valves to prevent over pressure of both the DFT containers and conveyance lines.
